You'd never see an American Youtube portal right? There is a sense that moves like this are always going to be secondary to the (American) mainstage. Perhaps that kind of segregation will undercut the capacity for online content to 'succeed' regardless of where it's from (God, I sound like such a liberal humanist all of a sudden!).

Re: Why do we need a YouTube Canada?

Matt I was just being annoying. Don't get me wrong here because I really love Montreal and Quebec and the French language and my northern friends, but I think the YouTube.ca - Quebec version would probably need an R rating, show a great deal of indifference to other Canadians, shoot off fireworks and drive ... umm... too fast. Nevertheless, Vive le Quebec libre!?

Re: Why do we need a YouTube Canada?

That's a good point, Nav. And don't get me wrong -- I think Canada is great, and I am all in favour of Canadian artists and content creators getting all the recognition they can get from wherever they can get it. But I still don't get the YouTube thing somehow -- maybe it just feels like sitting at the kids' table :-)

And Joe, your point is a good one as well. Where's the Quebecois version?

Re: Why do we need a YouTube Canada?

Matt I grew up near Montreal, in Plattsburgh USA. There *is* a language issue. Je Me Souviens le YouTube!

Re: Why do we need a YouTube Canada?

I think the advertising reason is probably it - better targeting etc. But perhaps there's something to it on the user's end - i.e. maybe people are more likely to participate in something when it feels 'local' but has a global audience. I've often lamented the general lack of a Canadian web presence, partly because I believe in the relationship between public projections and identity - if you never see yourself anywhere, sometimes you feel like you don't 'really exist'. Perhaps it wasn't Google's intent, but maybe there's a little bit of 'representative politics' going on here?
