Mathew's comments: Tay Zonday: Cheesy sellout 2.0

Still I can't get it out of my head....no I can't get it out of my head...

Hey Matthew, don't hate the playa because of the game. The ad just sucks. Simple. I don't think any hand wringing about selling out is relevant. The culture eats everything. If the Apple iPod Touch ad done by the 18-year old from Leeds sucked, would folks be calling him a sellout?

But for Tay Zonday to make money off his odd singing is not that different from doing a lounge act in Las Vegas in person or you writing for the Globe. Each of you has a passion you don't get paid for that you do because you love it, and a commercial interest that you also pursue because it pays the bills.

The intersection of art and commerce is a tough negotiation. Ya can't knock the hustle without cutting it a fair deal.

Fair enough, James -- although if I didn't know better, I'd think you
were suggesting that my writing for the Globe is as bad as Cherry
    Chocolate Rain :-)

Oh no, not at all. I like the writing. Keep up the pimp life!

I couldn't stomach my whole way through either the original song or the banal ad remix.

I can't really describe the way i feel other than just... Sadness. Good on him for making some cash, anyone would do the same given the same opportunity. it's just sad that something unique, that people of their own free will were interested in seeing, has suddenly been slapped with sponsorship and a couple of skantily clad girls. now he looks like every other fabricated artist that's been squashed through the marketing machine. I wish him the best, but i just hope he doesn't get left in the dirt once the sponsors have squeezed every penny out of his public following.

Wow...sad, yes - you, that is, not Tay. The commercial is even funnier than the original! And what the hell to basement-dwelling dorks like you ever mean be "sell out", anyway?! Am I a sellout because I get paid for the work I do? What the hell does that mean?
