Yes there is a filter problem -- see Shirky's excellent speech at Web2.0NYC http://web2expo.blip.tv/file/1277460/ -- but journalism doesn't have to get all academic to solve its problems. Forget the attention economy. Forget complicated filtering. Rediscover the 'why' and readers will find you.
