I would agree that companies have to do certain things in order to grow their business, and I would even agree with Sergey that Google being in China is probably better in the long run than not being there -- but what I think it points out is how difficult it is to have a motto like "Don't be evil" when you're a gigantic multinational corporation. It's a lot easier to pull off when you're just a little startup. You'll notice that the oil industry and the U.S. government don't have a motto like that :-) In that sense, Larry and Sergey have made their bed, and now they have to lie in it.

Yeah, and the Saudis and Venezuelans aren't the swellest, but they have all that oil, sooo...

C'mon guys. It ain't pretty, but you swallow hard and do what you have to do. A major online player without a .cn "on principle" makes about as much sense as Canucks enjoying mojitos in Cuba while the Yanks can only send their prisoners there.

This sort of thing really bugs me and I guess it's something all the major tech companies will do, but still, it scares me.
