By reading the stories it seems its been self financed (maybe a rich uncle?). Outsourced the tech backend.  Also i wonder how long they had the site running before they started to charge the membership fee? If everything falls into place it'll be interesting to discuss when someone starts moaning about the fact that they have to move to Cali to get their idea appreciated/funded/running.
